Texas A&M University’s Reed Arena was designed as a true multi-purpose center. The arena is used for men’s and women’s basketball games, volleyball games, commencement ceremonies, circus performances, and a wide range of music concerts.

The usage of an arena as a multi-purpose center is becoming commonplace these days. More and more institutions are realizing that if they build an arena with multipurpose capabilities, they not only make more revenue from the facility, but they will also save money from not having to build additional facilities to accommodate the many activities that a multipurpose center can host. Due to the fact that Reed Arena has the potential to benefit so many individuals, careful consideration was taken into the acoustic planning of the facility. Acoustic control is an important design consideration for multipurpose arenas due to the open design and acoustically reflective surfaces generally present. K- 13 Black was applied to 100,000 square feet of the arena’s ceiling for sound control. Due to its exceptional sound absorption properties, K-13 keeps noise levels and reverberation low, allowing full utilization of the arena. Because the University chose Black K-13, the arena has complete light control whether a commencement ceremony is in progress or a high powered concert is taking place.
